What’s the hardest part of P90X? Is it the dieting? Is the exercise programs? It may be that the hardest part of the program is not breaking it, at least not while trying to lead a normal life. This past week we had house guests: my wife’s cousin, her husband, and her two young boys. Now, as you may know, when you have guests over, you don’t usually tend to eat as well as you normally do, you certainly don’t worry about your usual fitness routine, and you probably don’t concern yourself with your eight hours minimum sleep every night. But I had to do all of those things.
I had to keep reminding myself. This is only 90 days. I can stick this out for 90 days. I can’t break out of the strict regimen that the program sets already. This meant, that while my guests were here, I had to mostly make all the meals; I couldn’t go out every night, and when I did go out to eat something, I had to be extremely picky in what I chose to eat. My guests were on vacation and certainly would have been happier than pigs in mud to eat nothing but ice cream three square meals a day. Most of the so-called healthy items on your average restaurant menu are anything but, so this meant diligently looking up nutritional information at home, deciding my meal hours ahead of time and choosing appropriately.
Besides my diet, I also had to keep up the workouts. P90X builds in a workout for every single day; ok, technically, the seventh day is a stretch workout OR a rest day, but I decided from the start, I wasn’t going to take any rest days. Normally, I do my workouts in the early evening; I wait until after my daughter is asleep. With guests here, it meant I had to work out even later than usual, since I had to wait for my guests to turn in as well. So for the last few days, I’ve been more tired than usual. Burnt out. Working out when I should be sleeping. This isn’t ideal. It’s not what I wanted to do. But still, it’s better than taking a swan dive and ditching the workouts altogether.
So, how do I feel now that my guests have moved on and left my home? Relieved. I can focus again, workout earlier, get all my sleep, and not have to worry as much about the diet of others affecting my own dieting.
